We are a small manufacturing factory established in Cape Town, South Africa, (on the southern tip of the African Continent), with a staff compliment of 18, catering to a niche market, principally in the flooring industry.

We have made tiles for many clients around the world, namely, RSA, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique , Namibia, Holland, Germany, England, China, USA (new market).

We manufacture to order, thus each client places their order with the factory to manufacture their tile request , this starts each orders lead period to delivery date program, starting with the wet clay tile production, Tile Leather drying time to allow the natural water in the clay to evaporate (slight shrinkage happens) then the tiles are hand packed into our Kilns to start the firing process to vitrify the clay into terracotta.

‘Warm Hearts, make Warm Hands, make Warm Tiles’ this is our slogan, each of your orders are made by hand, thus: hand mixed clay, hand scooped into press moulds, hand placed onto mini-wood boards, placed on tables to hand shape the surface and edges of each tile, then hand placed onto drying pallets, allowed to dry air dry for up to 7-14days to get leather dry, then hand placed into our Kilns to start the firing process, then hand picked out and placed into storage ready to be hand-packed onto pallets and made ready to for delivery to your project site.

Our African Clays are made from the decomposition of our Granite Mountains over years of rain washing the Feldspar, Iron-oxide, Alumina, silicas, quartz etc into the soils to produce out beautifully rich clays.

Established in 1975, we have a proven reputation for quality and reliable personal service. We have so many retuning clients that say: “You know Mark, we bought tiles from your Dad (Pat) way back, they are stunning, our house still looks amazing, can we get more of the same tiles as we are building on a new alternation & addition!.”

I took over from my Dad in the year of 2012 and had to learn on the run while running my Architectural Practice. I eventually had to move my office to the factory so that I could reduce the driving time between the office and the factory, this was a great move as we could now establish a design office for our Leo Tiles clients who need assistance with their layouts and floor designs. This allows us to collaborate with our client’s professional team, architects, interior designers, project managers, quantity surveyors and contractors in a smooth process as we understand their questions and can assist their team to make the best decisions for their projects.

Accountability

With our Batavian tiles we supply a guide to laying, treating and maintaining the floor. The methods we recommend require a minimum of effort to produce a beautiful result.

Quality

The Terracotta colour has some darker and lighter tones depending on where the tiles sit in the oven, closer to the elements they get darker reds with some in middle that are lighter red tones, some of the clay has impurities that change tones in the tile, this makes for a beautiful natural clay floor once laid.

Integrity

Due to the size variation and the need to install with thicker grout joints (average of 25mm thick tiles means that 25 mm joints should be used) we calculate coverage per m2 to be 9 tiles for our standard 300 x 300mm tiles using a 25mm grout joint. Due to this size variation, our tiles are sold per tile and not per m2. Size variation can be expected of approximately 6-8%.
